Course Description
Couple and sex therapy research often asks questions about experiences that are inherently relational: How do partners influence one another’s sexual desire, attachment security, conflict patterns, minority stress, or therapy outcomes? Yet many research designs treat each partner as an independent individual, losing the interactional processes that make relationships clinically meaningful.
This workshop introduces dyadic and relational research methods for clinicians, emerging scholars, and doctoral students interested in studying intimate relationships with greater conceptual and methodological precision. Participants will examine how to formulate relational research questions, define the dyad as a unit of inquiry, recruit and ethically engage multiple partners, and attend to the practical realities of collecting data from couples and other relationship constellations.
The course will introduce foundational concepts such as interdependence, actor and partner effects, shared versus discrepant perspectives, relational interviewing, and dyadic qualitative analysis. Participants will also consider how these methods apply across diverse…
